James Tatum is a professional artist based in Exeter, Devon. He has many years of teaching experience and regularly conducts painting workshops in the UK, Holland, France and Italy. In 2014 he was elected Academician, The South West Academy (SWAc). In 2017 he was selected ‘Landscape Painter of the Year’ by Devon Life.

On these very popular courses James will demonstrate and show you how to collect the information you need to simplify the landscape with sketchbook drawings, mixed media studies and finished work. You can work in the media of your choice; watercolours, pastels, oils, acrylics…whichever you prefer. His unique approach to teaching begins with how to see the landscape as painting before starting to paint, a method that allows the student to make strong, exciting, expressionistic landscape paintings which are beyond mere facsimiles.
